The first generation of Ford Mustangs (the "Mustang I" from 1964 to 1973 while the Mustang II started on 1974) changed 4 times over almost 10 years of production.

1964 1/2 and 1965 to 1966

Why 1964 1/2 ? Simply because the Ford Mustang's launch occured mid-1964. As Ford only did few minor changes in 1965, and to avoid potential customers to wait until the next summer for the new model year, all cars built in 1964 are VIN coded as 1965 models.

- 3 different body types : "notchback" coupe and convertible from 1964 and "fastback" coupe from 1965.

- 170 cid in line 6, 260 or 289 cid V8.

1967 and 1968

In 1967 the Ford Mustang had slight design changes : wider front grille, recessed rear lights, and sligthly modified dashboard where 5 dials layout became a standard equipment. All of the three body types are available from the beginning.

One of the most sought after Mustangs :  the Mustang Boss 429.

1971 to 1973

In 1971 the Mustang design dramatically changed. The Mustang's first owners grew, so did the Mustang. Coupes and convertibles are roomy but some enthusiasts claim no longer sporty. Fortunately, the Mach 1 and Boss Mustangs keep the pony car's good reputation for performances until 1972 (engine choice and power collapsed in 1973 due to the oil crisis) . This is the last classic Mustang version before the unpopular Mustang II (built on a Ford Pinto chassis) launch in 1974.
